I actually just gave my 1999 9-5 (with the 4cyl engine) to my sister, and it was still perpetual pretty strong after 160k+ miles. I always kept up with things though. For pattern, fully synthetic oil changes on a regular basis were done by me, as I like to let the oil pan take away more fully than any quickee shop lets it to get all the old oil out.
But other than that, there were not too many problems. I had to replace some gasket at about 120k, but I can't rememebr which one it was. That happened to be somewhat labor intensive. I also broke an axle, completely shearing it into two pieces. When I brought it to the trader, they said they had never seen anything like this before, with the exception of one guy who had set his up for racing. So I tab that one to an anomoly or lucky incident.
Other than that, the car still has the original turbo, which is pretty good for tht kind of mileage, though it may call for a rebuild in 10k or so. Not super expensive, and I could probably have done it myself if my sister didn't take the car with her to fashion.
So I would say the life expectency is pretty lengthy for the 9-5, at least 200k miles if infatuated care of. Some repairs could be expensive over the long haul, but it is a semi-richness vehicle, so that is to be expected. But it is safe, comfortible, gets good mileage, and still has tasteful performance. I liked mine enough to replace it with a 2006 9-5 just a few months back. It is hoped you can enjoy the vehicle as much as I did.
